904L Fasteners are made from an alloy that is non-magnetic in all conditions and easily welded and formed. The austenitic structure very tough, even under cryogenic temperatures. Its inherent anti-corrosive properties allow 904L to be made into bolts, nuts, washers, studs, socket head cap screws, as well as a wide variety of other fasteners.
It is commonly understood that 904L fasteners have less corrosion resistance than molybdenum-free grades such as 304L and 310L. For the maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments the steel should be solution treated after cold working the parts into fasteners: such as 904 bolts, nuts washers, and socket head cap screws.
904L is expensive due to the high concentration of costly ingredients such as nickel and molybdenum. Many applications in which 904L has previously performed under can also use alloys such as duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205
This alloy was actually developed for its resistance to sulphuric acid, it actually has a very broad range of resistance to other applications.
Typical applications include:
Processing plant for sulphuric, phosphoric and acetic acids
Pulp and paper processing
Components in gas scrubbing plants
Seawater cooling equipment
Oil refinery components
